Workshop on Wool Felting

Wool felting is a special kind of contemporary craft which is based on the natural properties of wool to create felt. Formerly people made ​​rugs, blankets, mattresses, pillows and hats of matted wool. Today from wool we can make incredibly beautiful clothing, funny volumetric toys, panels, various decorative items and original accessories. For the inmates of the Hope orphanage from the Krivosheentsy village of Skvirsky district of Kyiv region a workshop on wool felting was held. It was a part of the Good Cause Every Day! promo event by the Konstantin Kondakov Charity Foundation.

The children greeted the master joyfully, because they have never done this kind of needlework and wanted to start immediately. Natalia, a host of the workshop, said that there are two types of felting – wet and dry. In the dry felting wool is mixed and compacted with special tools. While wet felting people should use a soap solution, which helps to entangle wool threads  with each other quickly. Natalia showed the kids vivid examples of felting accessories that can be made from fluffy material.

At the workshop the guys created beautiful brooches of colored merino wool in the technique of wet felting. The boys and girls by themselves chose a color scheme of future brooches made ​​of wool. Everyone was very interested in working with natural materials and creating the unique crafts with their own hands. Throughout the lesson Natalia helped the children and gave detailed answers to all their questions. In the end everyone got beautiful flowers made ​​of felt, which in the future will become the original accessories.

We are glad that the lesson of creativity in the friendly atmosphere brought the children new knowledge and positive emotions. For those moments with love in our hearts we are building a new world!
